Privacy Policy
Maata helps families teach their home language to their children in the voices of the people who love them. It was made by a parent, for his own children and for other families like his. Your family’s voices belong to your family, so the app is built to keep everything on your own devices.
The short version
- We do not collect any data about you or your children.
- There are no accounts, no sign-in, no ads, no analytics and no tracking.
- Recordings, names and progress stay on your device. We never receive them.
- Files you choose to share (a backup, someone’s voice, a teacher pack) go only to the people and places you send them.
- The app contains no third-party code that collects data.
What the app keeps on your device
To work, Maata saves these things in its own storage on your iPhone or iPad, and nowhere else:
- Voice recordings made by family members, friends or teachers, and the short practice recordings children make to compare their voice.
- Learner names you type in, and each learner’s progress: lessons done, stars, streaks, and words they found tricky.
- The names of the people who record (for example, “Amma” or “Nanna”), and any words or corrections your family adds.
- Settings, such as sounds, reminders and which buddy each child chose.
- A small summary for the home-screen widget (the learner’s first name, tonight’s goal, their streak and a word of the day). It is stored in a shared area on the same device so the widget can show it, and it never leaves the device.
We, the developer, have no way to see any of this.
Microphone
Maata uses the microphone only when someone taps to record. Recordings are saved on your device. They are not uploaded, sent to any server, or used for speech recognition.
Computer voice
If a word has not been recorded yet, the app may read it aloud using a voice built into iOS. That speech is produced on your device by Apple’s system voices. The app does not send any text to us.
Reminders
If you turn on the daily reminder, the notifications are scheduled by your device itself. No server is involved, and we never learn when or whether your child practises.
Sharing files you choose to send
Maata can make three kinds of file. Each one is made only when you tap to make it, and goes only where you send it — by AirDrop, Messages, WhatsApp, email or the Files app:
- A backup of your recordings, family words and progress. If you save it to iCloud Drive, it is kept by Apple in your iCloud account under Apple’s own privacy policy.
- Someone’s voice (“Send Ammamma’s voice to family”): that one person’s recordings, their name, and any family words they recorded. It lets relatives far away take part.
- A teacher pack: topics and words a teacher recorded, with the teacher’s name and recordings.
The app you send them with (for example WhatsApp or Mail) handles them under its own privacy policy. We never receive these files. Opening one adds its voices to Maata on that device and changes nothing else.
If a future version adds automatic iCloud sync, your data will be stored in your own private iCloud storage, which we cannot access. We will update this page before that happens.
Purchases
Any purchase in Maata is handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. We do not receive your name, email address or payment details.
Children
Maata is designed to be used by children with their families. Because we collect no personal information from anyone, we collect none from children. Purchases are behind a parental gate. Parents stay in control of everything the app stores, and can delete it at any time.
Deleting your information
- Remove a learner in Me → Learners. This deletes that child’s name and progress.
- Re-record any word in Voices, or remove a person (long-press their name) to delete all of their recordings.
- Deleting the app removes everything it stored on that device. Any files you saved or sent elsewhere stay where you put them, until you delete them.
Changes to this policy
If the way Maata handles information changes, we will update this page and the date at the top before the change reaches the app.
